My real name is Jos Verboven but artistically I go by Brainvoyager. I’m a Dutch creator of cosmic and ambient electronic music and I live in the Netherlands. Spelled as ‘Brain Voyager’, this name appeared in 1985 as album title of the 7th album of the German electronic musician Robert Schroeder. This name covers exactly what Brainvoyager’s music stands for. It is music that tries to invoke voyages within the listener’s brain, thus turning him or her into a real brain voyager.

Electronic music has been a big musical passion for me for more than 40 years. However, the first 38 years were spent as a listener. My biggest influences come from Klaus Schulze, Tangerine Dream, Robert Schroeder & Steve Roach. Finally, I like trance music as well. So, I’m not unfamiliar with the music of the likes of Armin van Buuren either. In addition, I have put some links to their official websites under ‘Links/Other Artists’ in the main menu so that you can check their websites. As a result, my music is best described as a mixture of contemporary rhythms and hypnotic electronic ambiences, inspired by the model of retro Berlin School.

It would be great seeing Electronic Music of Brainvoyager become an interactive meeting place for electronic music enthusiasts. Therefore, this website doesn’t want to limit itself to a certain style or genre. Both the sections ‘News & Blog’ and ‘Reviews’ should be helpful to achieve this goal since there are lots of things to discover there, such as a history of Electronic Music, a concise overview, highlighting the milestones, from the late 19th century to the present time.

In August 2015 the UK based radio station West Star Radio asked me if I would like to do a weekly radio show. I said “Yes” and we agreed upon me doing a weekly radio show dedicated solely to electronic music of various styles. That’s how radio show “Electronic Fusion” of Brainvoyager was born. The very first episode was broadcast on 18 September 2015. Since October 2016 the German radio station Modul303 broadcasts radio show “Electronic Fusion” every week. Since March 2020 the German radio station Radio Dark Tunnel broadcasts radio show “Electronic Fusion” every week. Since October 2019 the US radio station Krypton Radio broadcasts radio show “Electronic Fusion” every week. Every Sunday a new episode will be broadcast. The show will re-run 12 hours later on the same day. For the most current broadcast schedule of radio show “Electronic Fusion” and for the weekly flyers and playlists of the radio show you can find everything on the BrainVoyager website.

The broadcast times of radio show “Electronic Fusion” are well divided over all days of the week. But in case you don’t like the broadcast schedules, or if you have missed an episode, or if you want to re-listen an episode of “Electronic Fusion”, you are lucky too. You can listen to “Electronic Fusion” on Mixcloud whenever you want and as many times you want.

Here is a link to an experimental review of my album Drifting Memories. Robin James wrote the review disguised as a very short science-fiction story, combining the description of the sound on the album Drifting Memories with a tale about leaving the Earth to find a new planet to start again on.

WISDOM in MEDIA: NewAgeUniverse.com

NewAgeUniverse.com is a bit of a hidden gem, a somewhat old-school website  that, despite its HTML layouts, offers a surprising amount of original content like the front page article excerpted above.  The piece "Could Be Good, Could Be Bad" tells a parable for the Chinese New Year, written by regular contributors Tom and Linda Peters who enjoy bringing the deeper stories behind holidays to light, as witnessed with their "Radical Re-Thinking of Valentine's Day" article in February.  

Born when "internet portals" were all the rage in the late '90s, NewAgeUniverse.com has outlasted many of it's competitors, including holistic print magazines that launched websites and have since closed them for lack of funding.  Private ownership, a community approach, and not spending on hi-tech upgrades has allowed the site to remain online, however, the owners, Suzanne Doucet and Beth Ann Hilton, think the time is right for a complete upgrade to a modern interactive model with accompanying store. How that will be accomplished - via investors or crowdfunding - remains to be seen.

Why now?  Hilton, the site's editor-in-chief, explains, "With the LOHAS market worldwide now estimated at $500+ Billion, the timing is good, and necessary; there simply aren't enough positive content sites out there to serve the market the way our planned re-design could. We are regularly approached by product reps, authors and musicians hungry for a place to publish or advertise their goods and services. We've turned them away for years, but recently looked at our traffic numbers and were amazed with what we found compared to similar sites.  Amazing, considering we really don't promote, we just do what we find interesting and relevant...it's almost like a scrapbook, well curated by experts in the field.  It's got great bones and is ready for its makeover!"

Freelance writers like the Peters' and subtopic editors are lining up to participate.  One of the site's charming twists is that the site topics are arranged in such a way that they can be searched and cross-referenced according to their related Chakras, curated by Doucet, an expert in Harmonics. For instance, one would click the "Body" button on the lefthand menu, and pages are sorted into four subcategories of topics: Beauty, Holistic Health, Nutrition and Bodywork/Yoga. Clicking on any of those takes one to a subcategory page of both original content and referral links out to approved sites and other publications.  

In fact, the freedom with which NewAgeUniverse.com shares info and links away from itself to other sites is remarkable.  Many portals of the past have shut down, or have been bought out, their editorial degraded into cheesy sites full of lists designed to grab traffic. But, the founders point out the the old portals did not have original content or a sense of niche community, and that makes all the difference.  The democratization and sharing of information is not only in line with community values, it is also the true spirit of the New Age.

AH says "Oops, one last thing about this 'shroom...."

Here at BEING, we usually write about fun and tasty things to eat, but today's post is about what NOT to eat - the Fly Agaric Mushroom! Our FUNGI FRIDAY ALERT is specifically aimed at informing the 123,000 nationwide subscribers of Arizona Highways magazine who are about to receive the October issue containing an "okay" to eat a certain mushroom that can be psychotropic when consumed raw...a little fact they neglected to mention in its "Nature Factoid" article. Oops.

Most of us are taught from childhood on not to eat unidentified bugs or plants, especially mushrooms, unless you're with someone in the know...a mycologist, for instance, or your earthy Grandpa.  Even so, trusting the editorial advice of AH - a glossy nature, travel and photography magazine - the story might have caused an eager chef to toss the potentially trippy little mushroom into a gourmet slo-food salad, with unexpected (and possibly terrifying) results for the Ladies Who Lunch or, heaven forbid, the rare toddler who eats everything Mommy eats. Scary.

Honestly, one has to wonder what caused the foggy thinking that allowed the writer to make such an error in the first place (although he does recommend use of a field guide to make sure you get the right mushrooms...apparently just not the one he's been reading, which would be helpful to know). But, we do praise the magazine for its quick action in sending out a special postcard alert to all of its subscribers to warn them of the error, and pulling the printed copies from newsstands; a corrected e-version will be available to non-subscribers wishing to purchase this month's issue.

Here is the key point in the actual warning, which is also featured on the AH website:

"The fly agaric mushroom should not be consumed in its raw form because of its unpredictable psychotropic and physical effects."

Unsurprisingly, in following with all of this, one of the magazine site's top questions in the Comments section today is:

"Where can I find some of these mushrooms?"
