Artist Feature: Peter Kater

“Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries.
Without them, humanity cannot survive.”
                                                           - Dalai Lama XIV, The Art of Happiness

Peter Kater, with ten GRAMMY® nominations and more than sixty albums to his name, is arguably one of the most prolific and popular contemporary pianists on the planet today.  He recently released Love, his first solo piano album in more than ten years, a collection of seven composed pieces and six improvisations that share the common theme of love and its many wonders and emotions.

The album’s liner notes border on poetic, as Peter explains the basis or inspiration of each piece, giving a deeper and more personal insight into the music. He explores the many facets of love, not just the more common musical themes of romance and infatuation. He also encompasses hurt, loss and healing as well as the love of self - a much more mature approach that translates beautifully into Peter’s unique and distinctive musical language.  The new work has been called “eloquent and moving” and “one of his best albums ever.”
“I have been playing the piano since I was 6 years old. There are very few things that are more natural to me than making music. In playing the piano I am able to express what is deep in my heart and soul, where words fall short and seem colorless in comparison. I am fortunate to have a recording studio in my home. Almost every time I sit at the piano to play, I press the record button just in case something "special" comes through. These improvisations and compositions were recorded over the last three years, in "the heat" of the moment. These are musical portraits of my heart, ripe with emotions, joy, complexities, excitement, pain and revelations of the various manifestations and landscapes of LOVE.”
                                                                               - Peter Kater, on LOVE
Originally born in Germany but raised in New Jersey, Peter is seemingly comfortable everywhere. Recently relocated to Los Angeles from Hawaii, the multi-platinum selling artist began working on another type of work near and dear to his heart,  composing the soundtrack to “Heart of the World,” a much-anticipated, three-hour PBS program focusing on the stunning National Parks of Colorado. This is gratifying work for Peter, who among his many awards and honors, has received the Environment Leadership Award from the United Nations, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Zone Music Reporter.

To date, the tireless composer and producer has scored over 100 television and film productions -- including music for the 2000 and 2004 world Olympic Games and eleven On- and Off-Broadway dramatic plays -- and performed all over the world for his devoted fans as well as presidents, dignitaries and spiritual leaders in fine venues including the United Nations and Carnegie Hall. In 2015, he joined in creating a Long Life Prayer in honor His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama’s 80th birthday.

This year, Kater is submitting his LOVE recording to the GRAMMY Awards’ Best Contemporary Instrumental category.  In a sense, he is returning to his roots, as his early success was not in New Age music, but in Contemporary Jazz.   His first solo piano album, Spirit, was released in 1983.   Following that, five of Kater’s releases charted in the Top 10 National Contemporary Airplay charts including his National #2 album, GATEWAY.

Kater says, “Love is a hybrid recording combining my classical roots and jazz improvisational instincts.   I’m excited that the new Contemporary Instrumental category now exists at The Recording Academy, because I feel it’s the best place for this new recording that truly crosses genres.”

Love is Peter Kater’s third project of 2015, released by Mysterium Music; all proceeds from the album's first week of downloads were donated to the American Nepal Medical Foundation's 2015 Earthquake Relief Fundraising Campaign.

Peter's complete discography, sheet music, events calendar, home concerts, and more can be explored at www.PeterKater.com.

On Relationships: Fear Battles; Love. Just. Is

Kute Blackson

"I'm Afraid of Being in a Committed Relationship, HELP!"

Don't you love when you stumble upon exactly what you need to hear, the the right moment? The moment when you are open and willing to receive the message? When the student is ready the teacher appears has always been a constant theme in my life. This video shook me to my core in the best way and before I get into that, I want to introduce you to the visionary who created the video, amongst others, Kute Blackson.

I have been a big fan of Kute Blackson, since last fall in 2012, when I, incredibly apprehensively, decided to attend LoveFest, a free, charity, conscious experience that definitely changed my life in a dramatic way. I was at a point in my life where I was pushing myself into being a "Yes, Man," like that amazing Jim Carrey flick, and trying hard to just trust where I was guided and quiet my criticizing, doubtful, fearful mind. I wanted to expand my world.

I enter this massive, nightclub like space in Hollywood, that is just packed with people. Filled with healers, music and vegan food and promises of a great time. I am thinking, what kind of hippie-free-for-all have I gotten myself into? I, thank God, start to make conversations with the people around me. I start to notice how different the energy feels. That I was, in fact, in a pretty special, loving space. Where people weren't trying to be the coolest in the room. Where people were beautifully and powerfully self expressed in their wardrobe, in the way they looked at you and in their connection with others. Then this extraordinary man comes onto the stage to introduce himself, and his vision for his event, LoveFest, and that's when I met Kute Blackson.

I was so struck by his vision, his enthusiasm, his "big-ness" in the best sense, and authentic sincerity. Since that event I have been an avid fan of his tweets, his messages and his video. I "stumbled" across this one and wanted to share with you my thoughts and its impact.

The headline of the video immediately spoke to me, "I'm Afraid of Being in a Committed Relationship, HELP!" Oh my, I thought I need to watch this now. I knew that even though on one hand, I craved a supportive, expansive, exploratory, intimate relationship with a man; on the other hand, the idea of being with someone, truly surrendering, who may undermine my dreams and my self's purpose completely terrified me. I was completely bringing the past into my fear zone and then having to recognize it and release it, over and over again. I knew what I truly needed was a shift in perspective.

So Kute's first few lines really freaked me out, "True Love is a death. What needs to die when you fall in love is the ego, the illusion of separation needs to dissolve." The idea of killing the ego, sure I am on board with that, but the idea of death really freaked me out. As an artist I think, wait, I need a strong sense of self for my art. As if my talent is something to hold onto. Apparently my ego had quite the grasp on me, since only the ego needs to control...

Then the video continues and Kute shares, "When people say oh my god I'm losing myself, the self that you are losing is not really you." That's it. Now I am hooked. That is fascinating and I would LOVE that to be true! I know I am not my mind and my doubts. Now I want to share this video without even watching it, I am so pumped. But I stay and watch it the whole way through, savoring every word.

And then Kute starts talking about sacred partnership or relationship, and it dawns on me, in a kind of tragic, but also inspiring way, that I have never imagined a relationship existing within that context before. Just adding the word sacred to relationship, blew my mind. I am sure I probably heard that at some other point and dismissed it, but at the place I was in, I was really able to get... what if a sacred relationship could exist? Meaning, what if someone could really honor my own dreams the way I know I am willing to honor theirs? What would it feel like, to be in that kind of trust, space and intimacy with someone?

Then Kute says that you lover can actual become a portal to know yourself better. To deepen your connection to yourself and the infinite. I guess the bottom line is you need to embrace whatever resonates with you in a given moment, as this really resonated with me. There are so many books are relationships, with so many tactics and techniques, ways to phrase things, ways to show someone something. Deepening your connection to yourself and your being, surrendering to whoever you become in that moment, seems pretty...well...special.

At the conclusion of the video, Kute teaches us that once we surrender we are free. And once we are free we realize that freedom is love and love is freedom and the more you love, as he says, the freer you become.

I can't say I have my head completely wrapped around everything this video has to offer. But I like the way "freedom is love and love is freedom" feels in my body and I want to digest it. To surrender to the idea that this is could be a truth I wasn't willing, or able to see...until now.

True Love Inspires Gifts of Valentine’s Day Love Songs by Danny Wright

Today is the day that we tend to ask, what is love, and how is it best expressed? Flowers? Poetry? Music? International concert pianist Danny Wright believes with all his heart in the latter.

This Valentine’s Day he offered lovers all over the world a unique way to express l’ amour to their loved ones by offering to compose original love songs in a customized keepsake package. Twenty-eight individuals embraced the opportunity to share their love stories with him, keeping him in the recording studio for months on end. The result is songs that he first intuits, then composes, performs, produces and ships out in a custom-designed gift package.

The resulting collection of love stories and songs, he says, are so moving that he plans to release a 2-CD set of the stories later this spring. The album, releasing via White Lyte Music LLC, will be Wright’s thirty-sixth album.

Wright says he is frequently asked what goes into creating a personal love song for two people he may never have met in person. He explains that the process begins with the giver of the gift writing a heartfelt paragraph to their loved one, which they initially share solely with Wright, alongside a list of the gift recipient’s favorite music. After absorbing all of this information, Wright says, the creative inspiration begins as he thinks about the appropriate mood and key for the musical love story. Once either a major or minor key is chosen, he waits for the melody or bridge to come through in such a way that befits the love story.

“I truly believe that the music is a gift from God,” Wright says, “and I am just here to deliver it. What I love about this process is that each piece becomes a work of art that captures the essence of someone who is deeply beloved to another.”

Each “giftee” receives five copies of their personal piano piece with their name on the cover, a Danny Wright performance video, a certificate of authenticity, and a note sharing all the wonderful things their loved one wrote on their behalf. Wright has proven particularly creative at designating a song title that captures both the recipient’s name and their special significance to their loved one. While certainly the ultimate romantic gift, his fans have also commissioned songs as gifts for mothers, mentors and community leaders. While there is a fee for each song, he says, it is well below what one might think from a pianist who has sold over 5 million albums. “I want to make this gift truly accessible to most people,” he says.

Today, ministry leader Sandy Walsh of Columbia, SC, received one of the special gift packages from her husband, author Chuck Walsh. “I opened the package and I just cried and laughed all at the same time. It’s the most incredible gift I’ve ever received; I can’t begin to tell you what it means to me.” Walsh, founder of the ministry A Child’s Answered Prayer, asked her husband how he’d found such an amazing gift. As it turns out, he had originally heard Wright’s music on Pandora.com, and loved it so much that he obtained the rights to Wright’s piece “Hayden’s Song” to use in the promotional video for his book titled “A Month of Tomorrows.”

Tara Watkins, a friend and longtime fan of Wright’s, chose to gift a personalized song to her husband, Brent, this Valentine’s Day, reciprocating the inspired gift he had given to her last year while their relationship seemed in jeopardy. “I truly believe that special song was a God-given gift that helped us to chart a new path in our lives,” said Watkins, a resident of Lufkin, TX. “When I tried to think of something special to give to Brent for Valentine’s Day this year, I realized that a heartfelt song would mean and say so much more than any material gift I could buy for him. It’s a simply timeless gift.”

Originally, Wright thought he would follow up his 2011 release, Soul 2 Soul, with another 12-song CD of the love songs, but he and his team couldn’t choose from among the 28 tracks. “They’re all so lovely,” co-producer Cheri White said of the new pieces, “It seemed a shame to pick just 12, so we’re opting for a double album of all 28 tracks, complete with liner notes about the story behind each love song.”

Wright has twice been named by Billboard Magazine as a Top 10 artist in his genre, with three of his albums ranking in Billboard's Top 10 New Age Albums for three consecutive years. His most recent release, Soul 2 Soul, spent several weeks on Amazon.com’s Easy Listening Bestseller’s list.

As a Steinway and PianoDisc artist, Wright celebrates the pure piano music, while steering close to fellow contemporaries Tom Barabas, George Winston, Dave Grusin, David Foster, Billy Joel, and Barbra Streisand. A native Texan based in Las Vegas, Wright’s command of musical textures and tones crosses the Contemporary, New Age and Christian genres.

Heart 2 Heart is slated for a late-May 2012 release; Soul 2 Soul is currently available for purchase via iTunes and Amazon, and at fine music stores everywhere via distribution by Inner Knot and E1 Entertainment. White Lyte Music plans to reissue several of Wright’s best-selling albums including An Intimate Christmas, Real Romance, Keys From My Heart, and Walking in Faith; all albums will be available both digitally and at brick-and-mortar retail stores.
